【Tokyo Midtown Store Gallery】47th Exhibit「Wagashi Food Samples: Savor With Your Eyes」

From 24 February until 28 June 2023, Toraya will hold an exhibition on food samples at Tokyo Midtown Store Gallery.

As you stroll through Japan’s neighborhoods, you will notice an abundance of food models in restaurant and coffee shop windows. True to the real dishes in every way, food models, also often referred to as "replica foods" or "food samples”, look incredibly appetizing. Originating in Japan, this unique culture attracts attention at home and abroad. 

This time, we focus on food samples of wagashi (traditional Japanese sweets). How exactly do the creators of food samples achieve these perfect expressions of each sweet’s appeal? We visited a food sample maker to understand more about the process and the techniques employed to convey deliciousness through the sense of sight alone.

Just looking at them is a pleasure, but the more you know, the more fascinating the world of food samples becomes. Let’s dig in!
